Rennsport Factory’s single and dual to single mass lightened flywheel and clutch kit is available for nearly any Mercedes engine and gearbox combination.

 

Our flywheels are CNC machined from a forged billet of chromoly steel bespoke to each order. These are dynamically balanced and as the timing and starter gear are machined into the flywheel the end product doesn’t require any bolts or ring gears pressed on to the flywheel. The unit comes all one piece for optimum high rpm safety. Our lightened units will reduce inertia, allowing the engine to respond faster when compared to OEM. The fast road and light competition options will be slightly lighter than the road variants unless otherwise specified.

 

The single mass gearboxes were generally found in cars up to around 1990, there after most will need our dual to single mass conversion kit. There are a few variants and gearbox code will need confirming upon ordering but we have direct replacements for most 5 and 6 speed gearboxes available. An example gearbox list can be found at the bottom of the page. Any doubts please send us your car details and we can confirm fitment.

 

The flywheel is available with early 2/3/4 prong and 60-2 timing markers to suit M102, M103, M104, M111, M112, M113, M117 and M119 engines. Timing markers are usually left in the OEM position where possible. We can customise or make the flywheel to suit almost any specification required. If there is an engine not on our list, please contact us, we’d be interested to develop it.

 

Note for the cars with the M117 or M119 engines, these have a different bell housing pattern to the standard pattern found on most other earlier models, be aware there isn’t a standard combination to suit these engines and a Mercedes gearbox without adaptation. If you select these timing markers with this flywheel we assume you’ve made your adapter plate to suit the offset you chose at ordering, if not we will need some dimensions to get the setup height correct. We do have a kit in progress for this application, please contact us with your requirements.

 

Clutch choice:

 

To get the best from any clutch system, it needs to be specified correctly for the application and within the torque rating. We have 3 categories for road use: road, fast road and light competition/track day clutches.

 

If you drive hard on the road or the car sees the occasional track day we’d recommend stepping over to either our fast road or light competition clutch system. The fast road system combines a heavy duty clutch cover with organic lined friction disc with increased metallic particles for improved thermal holding. This kit will be less aggressive on the transmission whilst retaining a lighter and more progressive engagement when compared to the cerametallic linings found in the full competition clutches.

 

If your vehicle is mainly a track or drift car, but you still drive it on the road occasionally, we’d recommend our light competition system. These kits are similar to the fast road but with unsprung friction discs and a heavier duty cover, with options for billet aluminium covers with chromoly pressure plates for improved stiffness and torque holding. The unsprung single plate options will be more direct and may have increased judder. These are only recommended if you’re on a budget and not able to step over to a twin system and need more torque capacity than the sprung hub kits can offer. These make good entry level drift kits and are available with ceramettalic linings if a more direct engagement is preferred. The cerametallic lining will hold more torque and thermal input but the engagement could be considered more difficult to drive on the road.

 

Full competition clutches are available in diameters of 140mm, 184mm, 200mm and 215mm and single, twin and triple variants. A twin or triple plate will hold more torque for less pedal effort. A smaller or lighter clutch will have a lower inertia improving engine and gear change response. Choice will depend on application.

 

Sprung hub friction discs:

 

The issue with converting from a dual mass to single mass flywheel is the OEM dual mass setup is designed to offer a vibration damping function in the flywheel rather than the friction disc like the older single mass setups. The clutches available for most dual mass gearboxes come with a solid hub friction disc which when combined with a single mass flywheel lose the damping function which makes for an easier, less jerky drive and helps prolong the life of the gearbox.

 

Our road and fast road/track day clutch systems are made bespoke to retain the damping function of a friction disc from a single mass clutch set without any sacrifice in performance or longevity in the clutch or gearbox. We’ve seen many cheaper units prematurely fail due to the sprung hub not being up to the stated specified torque, once compressed the hub rides on the rivets and the clutch acts as a solid unsprung unit which as it isn’t designed for this cannot hold the torque for long. For this reason, we only offer our road dual to single mass flywheels as a kit with a properly specified clutch.

 

The twin plates are usually unsprung due to the space available on the spline but still retain a progressive nature.

Please note the Sachs RCS kits have a flat diaphragm spring and will need a motorsport release bearing for optimum performance. An adapter for an OEM release bearing can be supplied, please contact us if this is a requirement.

 

Some of the commonly sold flywheels are in stock, but due to the large range we offer most kits are usually made bespoke to order and will be 4-8 weeks to get it through the machine shop, some more customised variants may need an element of design time so may be a bit longer.
